Dr. VanWingen graduated from The Lyman Briggs School of Michigan State University in 1995 with a degree in physiology, interdisciplinary studies in health and humanities. He received his MD from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 1997. From there he returned to Grand Rapids, Michigan, completing a residency in family medicine in 2000. 


He has been in a smaller private practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA with the same population of patients since 2000. He is affiliated with the Michigan State University as a clinical faculty. His teaching experience includes infectious disease curriculum and humanities along with mentoring students in his office. Dr. VanWingen is also the medical director for the West Michigan branch of Heartland Hospice and Home Care.  He holds privileges with Mercy Hospital, Forest View Psychiatric Hospital and Spectrum Hospital.


He has been involved in numerous overseas projects in India and Kenya. In 2018 he helped to found and is on the board of Archana’s Hope, a non-profit that helps the underserved.  Dr. VanWingen has an interest in bridging medical care with technology and over the past three years has helped to develop Care Convene, a telehealth and population health platform. 

Dr. VanWingen is passionate about history and empathy as they pertain to medical care. He has a deep and committed relationship with his patients.

He is married with four children and a dog. He loves antiques, home improvement, playing guitar and travel, especially to India.
